Gregg Popovich, the venerable head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, has stepped down from his coaching duties and transitioned into a front office role this season at the age of 76, due to health concerns. Popovich, a towering figure in the NBA, has inspired a wave of appreciation and personal anecdotes from players whose lives he has touched significantly.

This week, Dejounte Murray, the former Spurs player who now serves as the point guard for the New Orleans Pelicans, added his voice to the tributes. Murray reflected on his journey from a challenging childhood in Seattle to his professional career during an episode of The Pivot podcast hosted by Ryan Clark on Tuesday. He also recounted a touching story about Popovich that stands out.

Murray revealed that during his rookie season, his mother was unfortunately shot in the leg back in Seattle. In a remarkable act of kindness, Coach Popovich personally reached out to her and offered to pay for her to move to San Antonio, using his own funds, not those of the Spurs or Murray.

“He was a man who really cared about me,” Murray expressed, recalling Popovich’s gesture. “He wanted me to succeed in life first, and then in basketball. He’s incredibly genuine. He wanted to move my mom to San Antonio at his own expense after she was injured. He contacted her directly, without even telling me until afterwards. ‘We want to move you here.’ Using his money, not mine. Doesn’t that just show he really cares and loves me?”

Murray holds Popovich in high esteem, as evident from his emotional tribute when Popovich’s office role was officially announced. He also attended the press conference with several former Spurs teammates.

Popovich’s career in the NBA is marked not just by his strategic acumen but also by the deep personal connections he forged with his players, who are often quick to share their experiences.
