The Boston Celtics are currently facing a myriad of uncertainties.
Even before their second-round playoff exit at the hands of the New York Knicks, ESPN’s Shams Charania hinted at possible significant changes for the Celtics during the offseason. The team not only saw the end of their championship aspirations but also faces a challenging period ahead with key player Jayson Tatum recovering from surgery on his ruptured Achilles. Additionally, a change in the team’s ownership seems imminent and could lead to significant adjustments to the team’s roster.
In light of these challenges, Celtics forward Jaylen Brown remains optimistic. After the team’s recent loss, he shared his thoughts with the fans:
“I know things seem bleak in Boston at the moment,” he admitted. “With [Tatum] sidelined and our season ending on this note, it’s tough. However, there’s a lot to be hopeful about. I want everyone in the city to be excited about our future. This isn’t the end. Let’s look forward to what’s coming.”
For Brown, the loss to the Knicks felt akin to “death,” revealing the depth of his disappointment and contrasting emotions.
While Brown may remain with the Celtics, the same might not be true for some of his teammates. Charania also noted that the team plans to explore trade possibilities in the offseason.
Why the potential trades? Prior to their 2024 NBA Finals victory, Boston acquired forward Kristaps Porzingis and guard Jrue Holiday in significant trades and later secured them with contract extensions. Although these moves led to a championship, they now present a substantial financial burden.
If no changes are made to the roster, Boston would have five players—Porzingis, Holiday, Tatum, Brown, and Derrick White—each earning over $28 million next season. This would once again place the team above the NBA’s second salary cap apron, contributing to an unprecedented $500 million salary expenditure.
Thus, offloading some contracts seems not just likely, but necessary.
