More than ten years ago, Steve Kerr was at a major crossroads as he needed to decide between two coaching opportunities: leading the New York Knicks or the Golden State Warriors. Kerr was heavily favored for the Knicks’ job, especially since the team had recently appointed his old coach, Phil Jackson, as an executive. However, he soon became the preferred candidate for the Warriors after they let go of Mark Jackson, and Kerr chose to join Golden State.

Although it was a difficult choice at the time, it’s evident that Kerr’s decision was ultimately beneficial for his career, a fact of which he is fully aware.
“I never waste a second thinking about what might have been because I already know the outcome. I would have been dismissed in two years and would probably be in TV broadcasting now,” Kerr commented during an interview with 95.7 The Game.

Following Kerr’s decision, the Knicks went on to hire Derek Fisher, another former player under Jackson, as their coach. Fisher’s tenure was short-lived, lasting less than two seasons with a record of 40-96 before he was let go. Less than a year later, Phil Jackson also departed from the Knicks. The team wouldn’t make a playoff appearance again until 2021.
Kerr’s primary reasons for choosing the Warriors included the opportunity to coach Steph Curry and staying close to his family. With four NBA championships, a Coach of the Year title, and seven playoff appearances later, Kerr’s tenure in the Bay Area has been immensely successful, confirming that he definitely made the right decision.
