The Dallas Mavericks have recently been plagued by misfortune. The team’s prominent point guard, Kyrie Irving, experienced a tragic ACL tear in his left knee this past Monday, effectively ending his season. The serious nature of Irving’s injury was first disclosed by ESPN’s Shams Charania on Tuesday.

Charania highlighted Irving’s extensive playing time over the last month, which started just before the Mavericks made headlines with their unexpected trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Prior to his injury, Irving had been averaging 39.3 minutes in his last 10 games, the highest in the league from February 4 to March 2.
As discussions emerged about whether the intense workload and pressure as the Mavericks’ key player may have contributed to Irving’s injury, Dallas coach Jason Kidd addressed these speculations. He firmly dismissed them.
“We’re looking at a single incident,” Kidd told reporters before a game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, as reported by ESPN. “It’s an isolated event, a freak accident, and that’s the way it should be reported. We’re delving into conspiracy theories here. We expect our stars to play. This league isn’t about resting.”
The Mavericks have faced a tough season with injuries. Beyond Irving, reserve guard Jaden Hardy was also injured on Monday and is expected to be sidelined. Additionally, since his first appearance on February 8, Anthony Davis, who was traded from L.A. in a major exchange for Doncic, has been out. Other players like Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, and P.J. Washington are also unavailable due to injuries.
Irving’s injury, however, is particularly severe.
“Kai is our leader,” Kidd continued, according to ESPN. “And he was playing exceptionally well, perhaps some of the best basketball of his career. We can’t have it both ways, criticizing stars for not playing enough minutes and then saying they play too much when they do.”
Regardless of the reasons, one must sympathize with Irving, who bravely made two free-throws after the incident that concluded his season. Having participated in 50 of Dallas’ 62 games this season, he averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. Now, with the season taking an unfortunate turn, the end can’t come soon enough for the Mavericks.
