The appointment of Kenny Atkinson as head coach by the Cleveland Cavaliers, poached from the Golden State Warriors on June 28, initially led fans to anticipate a slight improvement over the previous coach, J.B. Bickerstaff.

However, what has unfolded since then has surpassed even the highest hopes. With a record of 35-6, the Cavaliers now boast the best record in the NBA at this midpoint of the season.

Speaking on Monday as reported by Duane Rankin from The Arizona Republic, even Atkinson himself admitted the team’s success was unexpected.

“We knew we were well-prepared coming out of training camp, but to say we were confident this would be the outcome—absolutely not. It’s been a total surprise,” Atkinson confessed.

The Cavaliers need to secure 31 wins out of their next 41 games to equal the franchise’s best record of 66-16, previously set in 2009 under the leadership of LeBron James.

Cleveland will kick off the latter half of the season against the Phoenix Suns in a special Martin Luther King Jr. Day game on Monday afternoon.
