Is DK Metcalf playing this week against the Ravens, and how long will star Steelers WR be out?

DK Metcalf won’t play this week as the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare to face the Baltimore Ravens in a winner-take-all AFC North showdown. The star receiver is serving the second and final game of his 2-game suspension for a physical altercation with a Detroit fan during Week 16. This marks a critical blow for Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers offense as they battle for playoff positioning.

🔥 Quick Facts

  • Metcalf eligibility: Will be available for the playoffs after Week 18 concludes
  • Suspension cause: Two-game ban for initiating unnecessary physical contact with a fan on December 22, 2025
  • Steelers impact: Losing leading receiver with nearly 3x the catches of backup options
  • Game stakes: Sunday Night Football matchup determines AFC North division winner and playoff seeding

Why Metcalf Is Out This Week Against the Ravens

The NFL suspended DK Metcalf for two games after he made contact with a Detroit Lions fan named Ryan Kennedy during Pittsburgh’s victory on December 22. Metcalf received the suspension for “initiating a physical confrontation” with the fan in the second quarter of the game.

According to multiple sources, Metcalf appealed the suspension, but the NFL upheld the two-game verdict. He served the first game during Week 17 against Cleveland and will serve his final suspension game on Sunday night against Baltimore. The loss of his $132 million star receiver comes at the absolute worst time for the Steelers.

The Steelers’ Star Receiver Misses Critical Matchup

Aaron Rodgers will be without his primary target as the Steelers face elimination in the AFC North race. Metcalf had become the Steelers’ offensive centerpiece since arriving via trade in March 2025, when Pittsburgh sent a second-round draft pick to Seattle and signed him to a 4-year, $132 million extension.

In his first season with Pittsburgh, Metcalf had recorded three catches of 28, 41, and 52 yards during the Steelers’ recent games. The two-time Pro Bowl receiver was far and away the team’s leading pass-catcher. Losing him for one of the most important games of the season severely limits Rodgers’ options in the passing game.

The Steelers didn’t add an established WR2 behind Metcalf this season, in part because they believed backup Roman Wilson would take a big step forward. Wilson, however, has struggled to produce and was made inactive for the Ravens game, adding to the Steelers’ offensive challenges.

When Will Metcalf Return to Action?

DK Metcalf will be eligible to return immediately after the Ravens game concludes on Sunday evening. Once his suspension is fully served, he can resume playing in the Wild Card round of the playoffs (scheduled for January 10-12), assuming the Steelers secure a playoff spot.

If Pittsburgh wins Sunday night and claims the AFC North title, Metcalf would have time to prepare for the Steelers’ first playoff opponent. However, if the Steelers lose and miss the playoffs entirely, his return would be irrelevant to Pittsburgh’s season.

“Metcalf is serving the second game of his two-game suspension for an altercation with a fan and won’t play in Sunday night’s Steelers-Ravens matchup.”

How Much Will the Steelers Miss Metcalf Without Him This Week?

The Steelers will struggle significantly without their offensive engine. Metcalf had recorded nearly three times the catches of the next available receiver option, making him virtually irreplaceable in this game. Without him, Aaron Rodgers will need to rely more heavily on running backs and other pass-catchers.

The Ravens will have the advantage on Sunday, especially with Lamar Jackson returning to the lineup after managing injuries. With the AFC North title on the line and elimination possible, Pittsburgh will need an exceptional effort from the rest of the roster to overcome the loss of their star receiver.
