Sam LaPorta‘s season is over. The Detroit Lions star tight end had back surgery and won’t return in 2025. Head coach Dan Campbell broke the news on Friday, Nov. 21. This leaves Detroit‘s explosive offense fighting a major battle down the stretch.

🔥 Quick Facts:

  • Sam LaPorta had back surgery and is “unlikely” to play again in 2025
  • He suffered the injury in Week 10 against Washington on Nov. 9
  • Campbell said there’s a “very slim” chance of return this season
  • Brock Wright takes over as the primary tight end going forward
  • 2023 second-round draft pick was a standout early in the season

What Happened to Sam LaPorta

Dan Campbell gave Lions fans the worst news possible on Friday, Nov. 21. The coach confirmed his star tight end underwent back surgery. And it gets worse. Campbell said the procedure went “really well long-term” but LaPorta is sidelined. For the rest of the year.

The injury happened way back in Week 10. LaPorta went down during Detroit‘s win over the Washington Commanders on Nov. 9. He was placed on injured reserve the following week. But surgery came later. Now there’s almost zero chance he’ll suit up again this season. “Very, very slim,” Campbell said when asked about the odds.

“The procedure went really well long-term,” Campbell explained to reporters. “But he’ll be out for a while.”

Why Detroit’s Offense Just Hit a Wall

This isn’t just any tight end going down. LaPorta was a centerpiece of Detroit‘s offense. The 2023 second-round pick had been putting up solid numbers before the injury. Now Jared Goff loses one of his favorite target options.

The impact showed immediately. In Week 11 against Philadelphia, the Lions got crushed 16-9. Brock Wright stepped in and played 49 of a possible 59 offensive snaps. But he only caught 2 passes for 8 yards. Not an ideal replacement. Detroit‘s offense struggled without their top target.

This timing couldn’t be worse. The Lions are fighting for NFC supremacy. Every win matters. Losing your best tight end mid-season is a gut punch.

Brock Wright Becomes the Starter Now

So who fills the void? That falls to Brock Wright. The backup has experience but lacks LaPorta‘s overall skill set. Wright showed up in Week 11 as the main option. Going forward, he’ll be Detroit‘s every-down tight end.

Wright does offer versatility. He can block. He can run routes. But replacing a talent like LaPorta takes more than just putting another body in. The Lions already tried three-receiver sets in Week 11. They’ll likely lean on that strategy more.

What’s Next for Detroit’s Playoff Run?

The Lions face New York Giants on Sunday. Then comes a brutal stretch with Chicago, Green Bay, and Minnesota. These games just got much tougher without LaPorta. The offense can’t run its normal sets. Play-calling becomes predictable.

  • Jared Goff loses a security blanket in the passing game
  • Detroit‘s red zone efficiency will likely drop
  • Other receivers get more defensive attention now
  • Playoff seeding becomes more critical with this loss
  • The Lions must win without their star tight end

Can Detroit Still Win the NFC?

People are asking: Is Detroit done? Not yet. But this is a major setback. The Lions were positioned well before LaPorta went down. Now they’re playing with one hand tied behind their backs. Every remaining game becomes more crucial.

Dan Campbell‘s team has talent. Goff is still elite. The offense has weapons beyond tight end. But losing your second-year starter in the prime of his season? That’s the kind of blow playoff dreams are made of. The Lions need to dig deep and find another gear. The calendar won’t stop. The NFC won’t wait for LaPorta to heal.
