@  majik19 : (25 January 2016 - 04:58 PM) it wasn't even close. It helped for sure that the shots were falling (if those 3s weren't falling, would we have gotten all mopey?) but man that was a great quarter.
@  Sir Thursday : (24 January 2016 - 11:22 PM) Easily the most fun I've had watching a Rockets game this year :).
@  Sir Thursday : (24 January 2016 - 11:21 PM) Oh man, that 4th quarter was special
@  thejohnnygold : (24 January 2016 - 10:35 PM) Amazing the difference Josh Smith is making on both ends of the floor.
@  Sir Thursday : (23 January 2016 - 03:42 AM) Majik - he's on the veteran's minimum so you're allowed to sign him no matter what your cap situation is.
@  Cooper : (22 January 2016 - 10:00 PM) Good to have Smith back, Blatt would be interesting, firing him makes no sense unless Bron wanted him out.
@  majik19 : (22 January 2016 - 09:23 PM) so... anyone interested in Eric Blatt? I am SHOCKED they fired him.
@  thejohnnygold : (22 January 2016 - 08:02 PM) @Mario--that is a funny thought. Smith and Howard's friendship is important and may help reinvigorate the entire team. I'm pretty excited about this.
@  Mario Peña : (22 January 2016 - 07:15 PM) Glad to see Smith back, the Rockets needed an irrational confidence frontline guy. Could we see a Josh Smith trickle down effect to Harden on defense, Brew everywhere and others. Kind of crazy to think that Smith is a glue guy for this team.
@  majik19 : (22 January 2016 - 05:28 PM) on a general note, I'm really glad he's back given all of our injuries right now - Motie, Dwight, and Harrell all unlikely (or worse) to play tonight
@  majik19 : (22 January 2016 - 05:14 PM) Can someone help me understand how this works with the cap? I thought we were hard capped.
@  txtdo1411 : (22 January 2016 - 03:48 PM) Oh I agree, I wanted Josh back before this season (admittedly I didn't think it hurt/helped much either way), but there is a definite "bad" Josh side of him that can be painful to watch. Just like how the Rockets can look so good one minute, and so bad the next. Josh fits in perfectly. I will say, the things he does well consistently, defense and rebounding, are two huge areas of need right now.
@  Sir Thursday : (22 January 2016 - 03:43 PM) Nah, come on, JSmoove was actually pretty consistent for us towards the end of last year.
@  txtdo1411 : (22 January 2016 - 03:42 PM) In all seriousness though, he should be a net positive like he was last year. Especially with the injuries to D-Mo and Dwight.
@  txtdo1411 : (22 January 2016 - 03:41 PM) If the Rox weren't already volatile enough, they just added the most volatile guy in the league.
@  Sir Thursday : (22 January 2016 - 03:32 PM) (Plus it means we don't have to rely on the TJ the Mercurial)
@  Sir Thursday : (22 January 2016 - 03:32 PM) Cool! He'll be useful. We needed someone who knows what their doing defending pick-and-roll coverage.
@  thenit : (22 January 2016 - 03:29 PM) Sooooo we got Josh back
@  thenit : (21 January 2016 - 07:50 AM) 2nd worse on +- rating on the team .
@  majik19 : (21 January 2016 - 04:10 AM) amazing that Harden can have a 33/17/14 line and still be -11. Also, that he can have that line - and we lose.

How important is Ariza?

I actually could see Morey just attempting to bring back everyone except Papa, drafting the best available guard at 18 and using the MLE for a veteran guard. Unfortunately there are few free agent guards that amount to much this summer. After all for the last couple of years every decent NBA player has been eying that $92M salary cap in the summer of 2016.

There is a lot to recommend that course of action. The Rockets made it to the WCF with two starters out for the season. They faced Paul and Curry featuring a PG rotation of Prigs and Terry. Two of their four best shooters from downtown, Bev and D-Mo, were done for the season.

Actually if the Rockets just lost Ariza and added LMA or Love they could possibly a worse team next season. Factoring in defense are LMA and Love that much more productive than with a healthy D-Mo? Possibly. But losing Ariza completely changes that evaluation.

I agree that there is no realistic way of getting Love or LMA.  Trading Jones and the pick for Lawson is the best move the Rockets could make.  And I would also keep Beverly and Brewer.  As I've said before, matching up with the Golden State's "small" lineup as best we can should be our preeminent goal this offseason.

I agree with both of you NorEastern and JohnnyRocket. 1) LMA compliments D12 and Harden well; but do we have to pay him the $15 mil he made last year "plus" (bidding war, Losing key depth)? Warriors are proving you don't need 3 superstars....two all-stars surrounded by very adequate players around them (Depth).

        2) Love probably stays in Cleveland and times it to test FA as the TV contract money hits the following summer.

        3) Lawson is under contract still (15-16 $12.4 mil, 16-17 $13.2 mil). Pretty close to max money. Career 6.6 ast/game, 37% from 3,
27 y/o. Last year he shot 34% from 3, 73% FT, with 9.6 ast/game. Ast's will go down with Rockets. I'm willing to trade TJ and Pap; but not sure Morey or Denver will go for it.

        4) George Hill 29 y/o under contract for two years (15-16 $8 mil, 16-17 $8 mil). Career 37% from 3. Again, I'm willing to trade TJ and Pap, but does Morey and Pacers. Pacers may wish to go younger at PF with TJ.

        5) Cavs found out in game one that the PG position may need to be quicker....sorry Prigi and Dellavedova. Drafting either Wright, Rozier, Grant would be a big improvement for the Rockets. I have been begging the Rockets to get a PG with size (6'5" Grant/Wright). I like Rozier, a lot Like Steve Francis when he came into the league.....no one player can keep him from driving into the lane, plus he has a good step back jumper.

        6) Doubt Danny Green and/or Leonard leave SA.

Playing GM I would like to trade Pap and TJ (Rockets needs a spacer at the 4 spot D-Mo brought his 3P% up to 37% at years end) to move from 32 back into the first, around 20-25. Draft Christian Wood. Some list him as 215 lbs, while others list him as 225 lbs. He is a project the first year, but
I let JSmoove move on because of the poor FT shooting. Warriors beat us out right by not resorting to hack-a-player much; unlike the Spurs. I tip my hat to them. I can't have D12 and JSmoove on the same team as 40 something % FT shooters. With no TJ and no JSmoove, I need another 4 that can shoot the 3. C)D12 and PF)D-Mo start....D-Mo slides to Center as Capela enters as PF (D12 rests). D-Mo spreads the floor while either D12 or Capela are in the game. Problem is D-Mo needs to rest as well. That's where I like Christian Wood to play some minutes. He blocks shots, rebounds, and shoots with good form and confidence from 3. Unlike Camby, releases the ball fairly quickly. At 6'11" hard to block his shot.
If Llull doesn't come to the NBA.....I would run with Grant/Wright/ or Rozier and resign Jet for one more year. If the Mavs are spending a lot of money on FA's, they may pass on Bev.....drafting one these younger, athletic (non injured), cheaper PG's. Bev can come back to Houston.

for what it's worth I may as well throw my two cents in the pot on Ariza......... WE ABSOLUTLY NEED HIM. Ariza showed us the value of pesky defense on wing positions. looking back on the Parson situation now......while many thought Morey had dropped the ball allowing Parson to leave we actually became better in the offense vs defense balance overall. Ariza is GLUE. every team needs Mario Elie. that contract is looking like a bargain right now compared to what we would have been dropping on Parsons and we would not have been as successful IMO. trading Ariza to make way for a star would be a mistake if it's not the right star. I agree with those who stated hiding one bad wing defender can be done but hiding multiple bad defenders was putting to much pressure one the interior defense and point to that fact as the biggest reason for our overall improvement this year. Yes Harden was a beast this year, but without the overall improvement defensively the spots where we are not sharp offensively would have been far more glaring. our defense kept us in a lot of games this year on nights when we couldn't throw a nickel in the ocean standing in a boat :)
