Over his two-year stint with the New York Knicks, Josh Hart has captured the hearts of fans with his tenacious playing style and impressive rebounding skills, particularly notable given his below-average height for the sport.

What might come as a surprise to many is that Hart shares a familial connection with a legendary figure in New York sports history. He is the grandnephew of Elston Howard, a former New York Yankees star who was the team’s first Black player and played as a catcher, first baseman, and left fielder approximately 60 years prior to Hart.

This past Tuesday, Hart made a visit to Yankee Stadium ahead of the New York Yankees’ game against the Baltimore Orioles. During his visit, the Yankees honored him by presenting him with a No. 32 jersey, commemorating his great uncle, Elston Howard.

Howard’s illustrious career spanned 15 seasons in Major League Baseball, including 13 seasons with the Yankees, two with the Boston Red Sox, and a stint with the Negro Leagues’ Kansas City Monarchs. He was a 12-time All-Star, won the American League MVP in 1963, earned four World Series rings, and won two Gold Gloves.

Born in St. Louis, Howard passed away in 1980 at the age of 51 from myocarditis, a rare heart condition. His coaching career had concluded just a year prior to his passing. Nonetheless, his remarkable legacy continues to live on through his grandnephew, Josh Hart.
