The new film Exit 8 turns a compact indie horror game into a claustrophobic, slow-burning movie that mines everyday transit for dread. Released amid a wave of liminal-space thrillers, it matters now because filmmakers are increasingly mining short-form games for cinematic ideas\u2014and this one shows both the promise and the pitfalls of that approach.<\/p>\n

At the center is a solitary commuter, played by Kazunari Ninomiya, who leaves a train after a sudden phone call and heads into the subway with a personal crisis on his mind. What begins as a rush to reach a hospital quickly devolves into a nightmarish maze: he discovers he is trapped in repeating tunnels and must learn to identify strange, out-of-place elements to survive.<\/p>\n

The movie preserves the game’s core mechanic\u2014one of its most unnerving ideas\u2014where encountering an irregularity forces the protagonist to backtrack, while clear stretches allow him to press on toward the elusive Exit 8. That puzzle-like logic becomes a dramatic device, turning small details\u2014a frozen commuter, a wrong sign\u2014into sources of sustained unease.<\/p>\n

Performance-wise, Yamato Kochi stands out as a figure who moves from ordinary passenger to uncanny presence. His role echoes moments fans will recognize from the source material but is expanded here with a compact backstory that gives the film additional emotional ballast.<\/p>\n

Writer-director Genki Kawamura, working with Kentaro Hirase on the screenplay, widens the scope of the original game rather than simply replaying it on screen. The result is a film that spends more time on character and context than the game could, though that decision also exposes some of the film\u2019s weaknesses.<\/p>\n

The visual approach leans on intimate, player-like camera moves that mimic first-person exploration. Rather than frequent jump scares, the film prefers building a sense of dread through what is not shown and by slow, deliberate framing.<\/p>\n
