Los Angeles Lakers icon Magic Johnson was quick to counter Minnesota Timberwolves standout Anthony Edwards’s critique of the 1990s era in basketball.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Edwards recently criticized the past NBA generations for what he perceived as a general lack of skill among the players, which prompted a sharp retort from Johnson. In a discussion with ESPN\u2019s Stephen A. Smith, Johnson dismissed Edwards’s comments due to his lack of significant achievements in the sport.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never respond to a guy who’s never won a championship,\u201d Johnson remarked. \u201cI’ve got nothing to say. He didn’t win a college championship, I don’t even know if he won a high school championship.\u201d<\/p>\n

This exchange occurred shortly after Edwards made headlines by claiming that Michael Jordan was the only player from his era who possessed true skill.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t watch it back in the day so I can\u2019t speak on it,\u201d Edwards admitted. \u201cThey say it was tougher back then than it is now, but I don\u2019t think anybody had skill back then. [Michael Jordan] was the only one that really had skill, you know what I mean? So that\u2019s why when they saw Kobe [Bryant], they were like, ‘Oh, my God.’ But now everybody has skill.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite his lack of championships, the 23-year-old Edwards has not been shy about his self-confidence. He boldly declared himself the \u201cNo. 1 option” on Team USA\u2019s squad at the Paris Games this summer, even with notable stars like LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Kevin Durant also on the team.<\/p>\n

In the last season, Edwards was instrumental in propelling Minnesota to the Western Conference Finals, where he averaged 24.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 7.8 assists across the five-game series against the Dallas Mavericks.<\/p>\n

In comparison to Johnson\u2019s impressive collection of five NBA championships and three league MVP awards, Edwards still has a long way to go to substantiate his bold statements. His performance in the upcoming 2024-25 season will be crucial.<\/p>\n
