The Dallas Mavericks sent shockwaves through the NBA by trading their star player Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis just before the February trade deadline. This move astonished many, including Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban, who found out about the trade shortly after it was finalized.<\/p>\n

“I received a text from our general manager. Initially, I thought he was seeking my opinion, but it quickly became clear he was informing me of what had already been decided,” Cuban shared on the Your Mom’s House<\/em> podcast. “I expressed my disagreement, but ultimately, it wasn’t up to me to decide.”<\/p>\n

Cuban, who had owned the Mavericks from 2000 until 2023 before selling the majority stake to Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont, remarked that such a trade would not have occurred under his ownership. Cuban played a significant role in drafting Doncic during his tenure.<\/p>\n

“Had I retained any influence, we wouldn’t have seen this trade,” Cuban stated. “I was just as surprised as everyone else. Once I sold the Mavericks, the new owner, Patrick Dumont, decided to put his trust in Nico, leading us to where we are now.”<\/p>\n

“Luka and I had a strong relationship; I got along well with his father as well,” Cuban added.<\/p>\n

Cuban’s feelings were echoed by many Mavericks fans, who were outraged by the decision to trade Doncic, a popular and key player in his prime at age 26.<\/p>\n

Initially, even Dumont was taken aback by the proposal to trade Doncic, and Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ general manager responsible for acquiring Doncic, initially thought the Mavericks were joking. Ultimately, Mavericks’ general manager Nico Harrison spearheaded the decision to trade Doncic, and Dumont permitted Harrison to proceed with this significant change, a decision Cuban stated he would never have made.<\/p>\n
