Incredible. Just \u2026 incredible<\/em>. Normally, you don\u2019t trade a player like Doncic. You extend his contract, repeatedly. You construct a statue in his honor. Meanwhile, you also strive to assemble a team around him that prevents him from wanting a trade to a larger market. What you typically wouldn\u2019t do is trade him away on your own volition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One rival team executive commented, \u201cThis is the craziest trade I can recall.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

So why<\/em>, Dallas? Why trade a 25-year-old cornerstone of the franchise? Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison provided the initial justification to ESPN, saying, \u201cI believe defense wins championships.\u201d That may be true, but last season, the Mavericks’ defense was strong enough to surpass the Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Minnesota Timberwolves in the conference playoffs. It wasn\u2019t a lack of defense that cost them in the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics; it was not having a third reliable scorer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that acquiring an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive focus will enhance our chances,\u201d Harrison explained, according to ESPN. \u201cOur team is built to win now and in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, as more details about the trade emerged, the less it seemed to make sense. According to ESPN, the Mavericks had concerns about Doncic\u2019s ongoing issues with conditioning. Indeed, his less-than-ideal physique has become a running joke in Dallas, yet it hasn\u2019t prevented him from making the All-NBA first team for the past five seasons. The Mavericks were reportedly also worried about committing a supermax salary to Doncic after next season. Apparently, they were the only team with such concerns.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In return for Doncic, Dallas receives Davis, Christie, and a future first-round pick. Just one<\/em> first-round pick. There\u2019s no denying that Davis is an exceptional player, averaging 25.7 points and 11.9 rebounds with a shooting percentage of 52.8% from the field. Davis also shares a long-standing friendship with Kyrie Irving, setting them up to be a formidable duo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, Davis will turn 32 next month, with Irving following at 33 a few weeks later. Both players have experienced significant health issues. The Mavericks are likely envisioning a lineup featuring Davis alongside Dereck Lively II, with Irving, Klay Thompson, and Spencer Dinwiddie sharing responsibilities in the backcourt. There definitely is potential for a contender here, but for how long? Maybe a year or two? Just as this group may be disbanding, Doncic will be entering his prime.\u00a0<\/p>\n
