The countdown has begun. Six episodes of the second season of Arcane, one of Netflix’s top series, have already been released since the start of November. The final episodes, which will conclude the series, are set to be unveiled soon. Indeed, the streaming platform follows a weekly release schedule for this adaptation of the League of Legends universe: episodes 7 to 9 are scheduled for November 23.
In season 2 of Arcane, Piltover and Zaun are recovering from Jinx’s attack. Although the wealthy city was leaning towards reconciliation at the end of season 1, this attack might reignite tensions between the two cities. Meanwhile, Vi will once again attempt to steer her sister back to the right path… unless a confrontation becomes unavoidable.
How is Arcane Created?
Fans understood from season 1 that Arcane is a uniquely demanding animated series, requiring significant time and investment, which explains the three-year gap between seasons.
Even though the series does not use motion capture, animators film each other to fine-tune scenes before animating them, aiming for a “semi-realistic” style. “On average, an animator produces about half a second of animation each day,” they clarified. They also teased that season 2 will continue the visual style of the first season, but even better.
However, such ambition comes with substantial costs. According to the American media outlet Variety, Arcane has cost over $250 million for its two seasons (including production and promotion costs, although this figure has not been confirmed by Riot Games), making it the most expensive animated series in history with “only” 18 episodes. The English-speaking media, however, notes that the series will at best break even for the studio.
Season 2 of Arcane Will Be the Last
Arcane will indeed conclude with this second season. In a video shared on social media, Christian Linke, co-creator of the series, explained the decision: “We had a very specific ending in mind from the start of the series, which is why the story of Arcane will wrap up in season 2.”
Fortunately, this does not mean the end of adaptations of League of Legends into animated series: “Arcane is just the beginning of our journey to tell a broader story, and it marks the start of our partnership with the incredible Parisian animation studio Fortiche,” Christian Linke stated. “The arc of Vi and Jinx has evolved far beyond anything we had ever imagined, and we want to give other champions [from League of Legends] the same treatment,” he added, confirming that Riot and Fortiche are already working on new series and film projects featuring new champions from the popular online game. So, which characters like Darius, Twitch, Urgot, Camille, or another from LOL will be the focus of a new series? At a conference in Paris, it was confirmed that “other projects are planned in collaboration with Riot Games.”
According to Variety, however, the series Arcane was initially intended to span five full seasons. But given the costs of seasons 1 and 2, the plans by Riot Games and Fortiche had to be adjusted, and the number of episodes was reduced. These costs are due, in part, to labor and budget overruns, the American media outlet reported.
What is the Plot of Arcane?
Two sisters, Vi and Powder, are taken in after the death of their parents by Vander, the leader of the rebels and mayor of the poor, underground district of Zaun, located not far from the affluent city of Piltover. Years later, during a heist gone wrong in Piltover, Vi and Powder discover mysterious crystals in an apartment they are trying to rob. The story of the two young girls, as well as several key city characters, then takes a dramatic turn.
