During a flurry of matches for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers this past Friday, it seems Boston Celtics’ star Jayson Tatum was inspired to bring a bit more soccer-style flair to his basketball game.

In a game against the Utah Jazz, Tatum made a bold move by attempting a behind-the-back dribble from left to right as he surged down the court. After intercepting a stray pass, he faced a tight situation with a following defender ready to capitalize on any misstep. This defender managed to disrupt Tatum’s dribble, causing the ball to come loose.

However, luck was on Tatum’s side. Despite the efforts of the Jazz defenders, none could secure the loose ball, which fortuitously landed back in Tatum’s hands, allowing him to complete an effortless lay-up.

Upon closer examination, it appears Tatum inadvertently clipped the ball with his heel, which sent it flying just over the heads of the defenders into a perfect spot for him to retrieve and score.

This incident led to some speculation about why a kicked ball violation wasn’t called. According to Section IV of NBA Rule No. 10, a violation occurs only if the ball is kicked intentionally. Unintentional kicks, like Tatum’s, do not warrant a penalty.

While the play showcased Tatum’s unexpected soccer skills, it was more a stroke of luck than a deliberate maneuver. Nonetheless, if Tatum ever decides to switch sports, the US Men’s National Team could certainly use his talents.
