The Golden State Warriors have found themselves in a difficult spot this offseason, grappling with how to handle the restricted free agency of 22-year-old forward Jonathan Kuminga.
Kuminga concluded the 2024-25 season with a remarkable performance over four games in the NBA playoffs’ second round, leading the Warriors in points in the absence of the injured Steph Curry. Although Kuminga’s emergence as the former seventh pick was beneficial for the team, it has complicated his free agency situation.
Following his standout playoff performances, Kuminga and his representatives have demanded an average annual salary of about $30 million for his next contract, although he has expressed a desire not to return to Golden State.
Kuminga’s camp want a big deal in the $30M+ range and don’t want to be back with Warriors.
Golden State wants a small deal in $20M range where they can flip him because there’s no market.

Unsurprisingly, the Warriors are reluctant to meet Kuminga’s salary demands and are actively looking for sign-and-trade deals to place him with a different team. The Warriors’ best offer is considerably below what Kuminga is seeking.
NBA insider Marc Stein recently disclosed that the Warriors’ highest offers for Kuminga have been in the vicinity of two years at $40 million. Kuminga’s team continues to explore sign-and-trade options, with Sacramento and Phoenix being the most eager potential suitors. However, Golden State insists on receiving a first-round pick in any sign-and-trade deal, a condition the Suns cannot meet as they lack an available first-round pick to offer.

Both parties are far from reaching an agreement, and it’s clear that a sign-and-trade deal might be the best resolution for all involved.
