On Nov. 8, a feature by ESPN’s Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst included a quote from an anonymous NBA scout who criticized Victor Wembanyama’s offensive skills.
“His defense is stellar, but his offensive play lacks impact,” the scout remarked. “It seems like he’s lacking a clear plan on the court.”
It’s fortunate that the critic remained unnamed, as their assessment now appears quite foolish.
In a thrilling 139–130 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday, the San Antonio Spurs’ phenom scored a personal best of 50 points from 18-of-29 shooting, including a record eight three-pointers from 16 attempts, all within just 32 minutes on the court. This marks his third consecutive game with at least six three-pointers.

Since the publication of that disparaging scout’s quote, Wembanyama has been averaging 36 points and 12 rebounds per game with a shooting accuracy of .591. He has astonishingly made 20 out of 37 attempts from beyond the arc, which is 54.1%. This is unprecedented for any non-guard player in NBA history over a span of three games.
While the scout may have had a point regarding Wembanyama’s offensive weaknesses, it’s only because his defensive skills are so dominant. He was the runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year last season, just behind four-time winner Rudy Gobert. Like many young talents, Wembanyama sometimes struggles to find his offensive groove. In the two games before this scoring spree, he totaled just 27 points on 10-of-27 shooting, making only three out of his 12 three-point attempts.
However, Wembanyama’s explosive 50-point game on Wednesday showcased his incredible versatility, scoring through post-ups, mid-range finesse, and of course, long-range bombs. Notably, several of his three-point attempts weren’t just from set plays; he also shot on the move during fast breaks.

Defending Wembanyama from 30 feet out is a daunting task because of his unique skill set.
The Wizards struggled to contain him whether he was being defended by French rookie Alex Sarr or veteran Jonas Valančiūnas. Wembanyama proved unstoppable. Early in the second quarter, two plays highlighted his offensive problem-solving: in one, he effortlessly dribbled past Valančiūnas for an easy dunk after being challenged on the perimeter; in another, he managed a tough finish despite significant physical contact.

When Wembanyama finds his rhythm, there’s virtually no effective way to guard him. Stronger players like Valančiūnas find themselves outmatched on the perimeter, while more agile defenders like Sarr are overpowered in the paint. And when Wembanyama combines physical play with exterior shooting, he becomes an intractable challenge for any defender.
