The basketball community mourns the loss of NBA great and esteemed ESPN commentator Bill Walton, who passed away at 71 in May. The Portland Trail Blazers, the franchise where Walton’s illustrious NBA journey began, have devised a meaningful tribute for him this season.

For the entire 2024-25 season, Trail Blazers players will wear a special patch on their left shoulder. This patch will feature Walton’s No. 32 set against a tie-dye backdrop, reflecting Walton’s well-known affinity for tie-dye patterns, which became emblematic of his unique style.

In addition, the celebration of Walton’s legacy will peak on March 9 during the Bill Walton Tribute Night, when the Trail Blazers face off against the Detroit Pistons at Moda Center. All attendees will receive a tie-dye headband, and fans are encouraged to don tie-dye apparel in a collective homage to Walton.

During his four-year tenure with Portland, Walton was instrumental in leading the team to the 1977 NBA Championship, earning the NBA Finals MVP title that year. He was also named the NBA MVP in 1978 and was selected for the NBA All-Star team twice. The Trail Blazers later retired his No. 32 jersey, and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

After retiring from professional basketball, Walton embarked on a successful broadcasting career in 1990 and became ESPN’s primary Pac-12 game analyst in 2012.
