In a monumental development reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Buss family is on the verge of transferring ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter, with the deal valued around a staggering $10 billion. This transaction sets a new record for the priciest purchase of a North American sports team.

This historic sale surpasses the previous record held by the Boston Celtics, who were acquired by Bill Chisholm for $6.1 billion earlier this year. Mark Walter’s acquisition of the Lakers eclipses this figure by a substantial margin.

Following the Lakers’ sale, here is an updated list of the top ten most expensive sales in the history of American sports franchises.

Over the last five years, the record for the most expensive sports franchise sale has soared, starting from Steve Cohen’s $2.4 billion acquisition of the Mets in 2020 to the recent $10 billion purchase of the Lakers by Walter in 2025. The Mets sale still holds the record for the highest in MLB history.

The escalation began with the Denver Broncos being sold to the Walton-Penner family ownership group for $4.65 billion in 2022. The same year saw the Phoenix Suns and Mercury being sold to Mat Ishbia for $4 billion, setting a record at that time for the NBA and WNBA.

In 2023, the Washington Commanders were sold for $6.05 billion to a consortium led by Josh Harris, overtaking the previous NFL record. Although the Celtics and now the Lakers have surpassed this figure, it remains the highest sale in NFL history.
