The NBA coaching community was shaken on Tuesday when the Denver Nuggets unexpectedly dismissed their head coach Michael Malone and general manager Calvin Booth. This surprising decision occurred despite Malone leading the Nuggets to an NBA championship just two years ago in 2023, and with only three games left in the regular season, with the team currently positioned fifth in the Western Conference.
This move reflects sentiments similar to those recently expressed by Joe Mazzulla of the Boston Celtics. Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr also responded profoundly to the news, which followed closely on the heels of the Memphis Grizzlies firing head coach Taylor Jenkins at the end of March.
“Shocked, like everyone else,” Kerr remarked before the Warriors’ game against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday. “Mike was undoubtedly an outstanding coach—a championship-winning coach with an impressive record. Just like with Taylor, you wouldn’t anticipate such changes happening so late in the season.”
Kerr added, “As I mentioned regarding Taylor, each organization must manage its affairs independently, and we’re not privy to the internal details. I can’t offer much commentary other than to extend my best wishes to Mike. He’s been truly remarkable. It doesn’t seem fair, but unfortunately, this is the nature of our industry. We’re all destined to face a similar end eventually. That’s just how it is.”

“We’re all going to suffer a similar fate at some point. That’s kind of the way it is.”

Kerr further elaborated after the game, discussing how the influx of money has transformed league dynamics and made coaches more susceptible to abrupt changes. “Most teams are now owned by billionaires or large corporations, making all of us more expendable,” he explained when asked about the challenges of coaching. “There’s a significant amount of money in this industry. While there are benefits to this, it also means we’re all earning higher salaries than we did five years ago, yet we are far more vulnerable.”
“Many owners may not hesitate to dismiss a coach and settle their contracts. We chose this career and we love it, but it certainly isn’t the most stable,” Kerr concluded.
