The move of the Seattle SuperSonics to Oklahoma City in 2008 is often cited as one of the most controversial team relocations in the chaotic history of sports movements.

Yet, the potential return of the SuperSonics as an expansion team might amend one of the major grievances from that relocation.

According to a recent report on Tuesday morning by ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, Kevin Pelton, and Brian Windhorst, should a new team be established in Seattle, the Oklahoma City Thunder would hand over the historical records from before their relocation. This includes the legendary 1979 championship won by the SuperSonics.

“If Seattle were to acquire a team, the Thunder has agreed to return the historical records of the SuperSonics to them—mirroring the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets scenario, where they reclaimed the historical records of the New Orleans Pelicans from their time in Charlotte after reverting from the Bobcats back to the Hornets in 2014,” reported the trio of insiders.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has recently made it known that the league will be looking into expansion later this season, following the establishment of new collective bargaining agreements and media rights arrangements starting from early 2023.

According to Bontemps, Pelton, and Windhorst, Seattle and Las Vegas are the frontrunners as potential cities for expansion, with other cities like Mexico City, Montreal, Vancouver, Kansas City, and Louisville also in the running for consideration.
