The Los Angeles Lakers are openly discussing their ambition to retain the title at the franchise’s 2023–24 In-Season Tournament.
While the Lakers aim to enhance their NBA Cup achievements already showcased at Crypto.com Arena, forward Rui Hachimura has his sights set on something else.
“Money is our main goal,” Hachimura confessed on Wednesday [via Los Angeles Times]. “That was a huge motivator last year. We’re eyeing the substantial reward again.”
Last season, the Lakers claimed the NBA Cup, previously known as the In-Season Tournament, by overcoming the Indiana Pacers with a score of 123–109 in Las Vegas. Every player on the team, from LeBron James to the benchwarmers, received a $500,000 bonus. This season, the prize has been raised to $514,970 per player.
Among the Lakers’ 15 active players, seven earn under $4 million annually, including first-round selection Dalton Knecht and second-round pick Bronny James.
“I mean, $500,000 is $500,000,” stated Lakers guard Austin Reaves.
The Lakers are set to start their NBA Cup journey with a game against the San Antonio Spurs this coming Friday night.
