Rodney Hood, after an eight-year career in the NBA, has decided to retire from professional basketball, he confirmed to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin on Thursday.
Regarding his future plans, Hood has already set his sights on a different career path.
“I want to coach,” he shared with McMenamin. “It brings to mind the well-known speech by Roosevelt, ‘The man in the arena.’ I’ve been that man in the arena. While I may not have been the top player, I was fortunate enough to compete with and against some of the greatest players in history. That experience offers me valuable perspectives.”

“I’ve also faced plenty of challenges,” he continued. “From injuries to trades, I’ve seen it all—from being a key player to sitting on the bench. I aim to leverage these experiences to guide and support upcoming athletes in the next chapter of my life.”
Hood, picked 23rd overall by the Utah Jazz in the 2014 NBA draft, went on to play for several teams including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers, Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Clippers, and Milwaukee Bucks. He joined the G League’s Memphis Hustle in February 2024 but his comeback was cut short by another injury.
“Retiring was difficult,” admitted Hood. “But I’ve come to terms with it. I did my best to keep going. After an Achilles tear, I wasn’t the same, and although I managed to recover and play in the G League this spring, I injured myself again. It was a sign from my body that it was time to move on.”
