Throughout this summer’s NBA playoffs, the Indiana Pacers have consistently pulled off some of the season’s most remarkable victories, largely thanks to their standout guard, Tyrese Haliburton.
Before stepping onto the court for Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Haliburton had already nailed three game-winners during the playoffs. He continued his clutch streak by sinking a decisive long two-pointer with just 0.3 seconds remaining, securing a victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder that evening.
However, mere minutes before his game-defining shot, ESPN commentator Richard Jefferson offered some pointed critique of Haliburton’s play.
With the Pacers trailing the Thunder by six points and only three and a half minutes left on the clock, Jefferson criticized Haliburton’s fluctuating performances:
“Tyrese Haliburton, he has these games where he can be dominant and look like one of the league’s top players, and then there are games where his stats are more modest, like 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists. Those numbers are like tour dates. You can’t have your best player delivering tour dates in the NBA Finals,” Jefferson commented during the broadcast.

Despite the criticism, Haliburton closed out the game with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists—solid numbers, though not spectacular. More importantly, he made crucial baskets when they counted the most, propelling a tenacious Pacers team to a 111-110 comeback victory on the road in Game 1. This certainly showcases the traits of a true superstar.
