ESPN has declared that Richard Jefferson will be stepping up as their premier NBA commentator, joining the elite broadcast squad of Mike Breen and Doris Burke, with Lisa Salters on reporting duties. In a significant career milestone, Jefferson will be part of the team covering the 2025 NBA Finals.

Having collaborated with the team throughout this season and even commentating during the In-Season Tournament, Jefferson’s elevation to the top tier has now been confirmed. Despite this advancement, his future with ESPN remains uncertain as his current contract concludes after this season, and there is speculation, as per Andrew Marchand from The Athletic, that Amazon Prime may be interested in acquiring his services for their sports coverage.

ESPN has faced challenges in filling the lead analyst position since the departure of Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson in the summer of 2023. Doc Rivers initially took on the role at the start of the 2023-24 season, only to leave in January 2024 to coach the Milwaukee Bucks. JJ Redick succeeded Rivers, but he too left the analyst position to coach the Los Angeles Lakers in June.

Since retiring from professional basketball in October 2018, after a 17-year career that included winning the NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016, Jefferson has been part of the ESPN family since 2019.

Throughout his tenure at ESPN, he has been featured on programs such as NBA Today, NBA Countdown, and the network’s NBA pregame show.
