Like many sports fans, Patrick Mahomes was taken aback by the surprising trade involving Luka Doncic.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, who is also a big fan of the Dallas Mavericks, recently shared how he coped with the trade that saw the Mavs’ key player, Luka Doncic, move to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis right at the trade deadline.
“The news really took some time to sink in,” the Super Bowl winner admitted to Cory Woodroof of For the Win in a Thursday interview. “I was in bed at home when I heard about the Doncic trade, and I immediately woke my wife to tell her, though she probably wasn’t as affected by it as I was. She pretended to be interested for my sake, then went back to sleep, leaving me awake pondering it for hours.”
His response was understandable, however.
“Luka is more than just a player to me. I’ve been following him since he was 18 and started in Dallas, while I was around 22,” Mahomes explained. “I’m genuinely happy for him moving to a stellar organization like the Lakers, and I believe he will thrive there.”
Fortunately, the Mavericks had a stroke of luck by winning the draft lottery and picking up the promising young talent Cooper Flagg, setting a positive direction post-trade.
“Winning the draft lottery and drafting Cooper Flagg has been a whirlwind of emotions. It’s exciting, and with the team getting healthy again, I believe we stand a strong chance at contending for the championship next year,” Mahomes added enthusiastically.
No doubt, Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison, despite the criticism, remains optimistic, viewing the upheaval as part of a broader strategy. While some may be skeptical, it’s undeniable that the outlook for Mavs fans, including Mahomes, is finally improving after a challenging period.
