Two years ago, the Denver Nuggets captured their maiden NBA championship, thanks to two critical components: a standout star, Nikola Jokic, at center, and a robust, effective bench.

As of 2025, the Nuggets possess only one of these key ingredients, and it’s not the bench.

On a remarkable Saturday, Jokic scored a career-high 56 points against the Washington Wizards, surpassing his previous record of 50 points set back on February 6, 2021. Despite his impressive performance, the Wizards, who had a dismal record of 2-18 entering the game, defeated the Nuggets 122–113.

While Jokic excelled, also snagging 16 rebounds and dishing out eight assists, the rest of the Denver team, plagued by injuries, found it tough to contribute effectively. Players other than Jokic managed to make only 24 out of their 56 field goal attempts (42.9%), and guard Julian Strawther was responsible for 18 of the 21 points scored by the bench.

Interestingly, Jokic’s previous career high in 2021 also came in a loss—a 119–114 setback against the Sacramento Kings.

The Wizards, on the other hand, achieved their first victory since October 30, ending a 16-game losing streak.
