The Brooklyn Nets are navigating a transitional phase, having moved past the era of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden. The team is now poised for a rebuild, equipped with numerous draft picks obtained from trading Durant and Mikal Bridges for substantial returns.

Despite expectations that the 2024-25 Nets would be vying for a high lottery pick, the team has shown unexpected competitiveness on the court with a roster that seems outmatched. Under the guidance of rookie head coach Jordi Fernández, the Nets have secured three straight wins, including consecutive victories against one of the top teams in the Western Conference, the Houston Rockets.

A dramatic finish marked Tuesday night’s game at the Barclays Center. Trailing the Rockets 97–93 with only 9.5 seconds remaining, Nets guard Keon Johnson sank a three-pointer to narrow the gap to a single point. Brooklyn then intensified their defense on the Rockets’ subsequent inbounds pass, resulting in a mistake that Tosan Evbuomwan capitalized on by deflecting the ball to D’Angelo Russell. Russell, in his second tenure with the Nets, clinched the game with a game-winning three-pointer shortly after Johnson’s vital shot.

This was only the second three-pointer made by Russell in what was otherwise a challenging game for the former All-Star. Leading the scoring for Brooklyn, Johnson finished the game with 22 points, the second highest in his career.

With this victory, the Nets’ record improves to 17–33. They are now just four games away from a spot in the NBA’s play-in tournament,
