“Marie” is a cinematic adaptation of the biblical story of the birth of Jesus Christ, directed by D.J. Caruso, set to be available on Netflix from December 6, 2024.

Following the series on Moses, another pivotal biblical character, Mary of Nazareth, receives her own Netflix adaptation. Titled simply Marie, the film offers a fresh perspective on the biblical narrative through a feminine lens, detailing the Virgin Mary’s youth and her subsequent flight to Egypt to safeguard her son, Jesus.

In terms of casting, Mary and Joseph are portrayed by Noa Cohen and Ido Tako, both emerging Israeli actors. The antagonist, King Herod, is played by the legendary Anthony Hopkins.

The movie Marie highlights a lesser-known period of Mary’s life as she transitions into adulthood. Moving beyond the iconic image of Jesus’ mother, the film depicts her as a young woman facing enormous challenges: overcoming social stigma, fleeing from a jealous king, and bearing the burden of a destiny that will alter the course of history.

What is the Plot of Marie?

Chosen to bear the Son of God following a miraculous conception, Mary faces rejection and is forced into hiding. When King Herod decrees the death of all male infants in a brutal attempt to kill the newborn, she has no choice but to escape with Joseph, her sole focus being to protect her child at all costs.
