Netflix’s political series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell is making a comeback with its second season on October 31. But do you remember the plot well?

Among the unexpected hits on Netflix in 2023 was The Diplomat. This political thriller tracks the initial steps of Kate Wyler, a Middle East specialist, as she takes on her role as the U.S. Ambassador to London amidst an unfolding international crisis that she must resolve at all costs.

This series offered a cascade of twists focusing on power struggles and even marriage. Acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, The Diplomat earned a second season, set to premiere on October 31, 2024. Before you dive into the six new episodes, do you recall the details of the first season? If not, we’ve got a complete rundown right here, complete with spoilers.

Season 1 Recap of The Diplomat

In its debut season in 2023, diplomat Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is unexpectedly appointed as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, despite her lack of appetite for political gamesmanship. Her arrival coincides with an international crisis: a British aircraft carrier has been attacked near the Iranian coast.

Throughout the season, Kate Wyler must forge alliances to assert her authority in her role, prevent the situation from worsening with a belligerent British Prime Minister, and uncover the real perpetrator behind the attack. Unbeknownst to her initially, her appointment as ambassador is also a test to see if she has what it takes to become the next Vice President of the United States.

Meanwhile, she manages her tumultuous personal life: her strained marriage with Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), a former ambassador who is not quite ready to step back and tends to meddle in her work, and her growing romantic feelings for British Foreign Secretary Dennison (David Gyasi).

The season packs a lot into its episodes, culminating in a dramatic finale. Initially, the attack on the British aircraft carrier appears to be the work of Iran, then Russia (supposedly carried out by a certain Lenkov, a leader of a Russian mercenary group), but the finale reveals the true mastermind is actually the British Prime Minister himself, Nicol Trowbridge!

But there’s no time to process this twist as the final episode of season 1 of The Diplomat ends with a bang. The lives of four key characters are at risk: British MP Merritt Grove, American Embassy agent Ronnie Buckhurst (Jess Chanliau), Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh), and Kate’s husband, Hal. Did they survive? Who attacked them? Find out in season 2 of The Diplomat.
