NBA Trade Deadline Like ‘Modern Slavery,’ Claims Warriors’ Dennis Schroder

Dennis Schröder has expressed his displeasure with the NBA trade deadline.

The guard for the Golden State Warriors commented on Tuesday about the recent trade of Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, taking the opportunity to share his broader views on the trade deadline.

Schröder criticized the Dallas Mavericks for trading Dončić after his significant contributions to the team. He highlighted that Dončić is now unable to sign the same supermax extension that he would have been eligible for with Dallas, potentially costing him over $100 million. Schröder remarked, “Not even Steph Curry’s safe probably when I see that. It’s a messed up business.”

His criticism didn’t stop there.

“It’s like modern slavery, at the end of the day,” Schröder stated. “Everyone can decide where you’re going, even if you have a contract. Sure, we earn a lot of money and it helps feed our families, but ultimately, if they say, ‘You’re not coming to work tomorrow, you’re going somewhere else,’ they have that power. That needs to change a bit.”

While acknowledging the privileges NBA players have, he added, “Still, we should be grateful that we’re here and get to live this every day. Everyone here is blessed. But when you really think about it, it’s quite insane that the organization can say, ‘We want you to prioritize the team, but you’re going elsewhere.’ It’s overwhelming,” said Schröder.

The 31-year-old has been part of five trades during his 12-year career. Now, as the Warriors prepare for this Thursday’s trade deadline, Schröder or his teammates might find themselves relocating once again.
