The NBA has taken disciplinary action against Joel Embiid following an incident involving a journalist from the Philadelphia Inquirer after a game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that Embiid received a three-game suspension for pushing Marcus Hayes, a columnist, in the team’s locker room. The confrontation was sparked by a piece Hayes penned that mentioned Embiid’s son and his deceased brother, which upset the Philadelphia 76ers’ center.

Following an investigation into the event, the NBA decided on a three-game suspension for Embiid, who has been sidelined with a knee injury and has not appeared in any games this season.

This suspension will further delay the start of Embiid’s 2024-25 season. There was hope that the 30-year-old might be able to play in Wednesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers, but now the earliest he can return is on Tuesday, Nov. 12, when the 76ers host the New York Knicks during the NBA Cup.

The NBA issued a statement regarding the suspension, emphasizing, “The relationship between players and media is built on mutual respect. While we understand Joel’s reaction to the personal remarks in the reporter’s article, interactions must remain professional and never become physical.”

With Embiid out, the 76ers have started the season with a 1-5 record. Even the return of Paul George for his season debut on Monday night did not prevent a 118–115 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Last season, Embiid played in 39 games, averaging 34.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game.
