The office of the U.S. District Attorney has initiated a probe into experienced NBA player Malik Beasley, focusing on accusations that he was involved in gambling activities tied to NBA matches and specific prop bets, according to information from Shams Charania of ESPN.
Beasley, who was approaching free agency, appeared in every game of the 2024-25 season for the Pistons, delivering one of his most impressive seasons. He achieved an average of 16.3 points and successfully completed 3.9 three-point shots per game at a rate of 41.6%. With 319 three-pointers, he was only second to Anthony Edwards from the Minnesota Timberwolves in the league.
At 28 years old, Beasley was in negotiations for a new agreement to remain with Detroit. Reports from Charania indicate that Beasley and the Pistons were considering a three-year contract worth $45 million, but the ongoing gambling investigation has paused these discussions.
The precise allegations against Beasley have yet to be detailed publicly. Currently, he is only subject to investigation and has not been formally charged with any criminal activity. Chris Mannix from Sports Illustrated has reported that the NBA is assisting with the investigation, which is being handled by the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
This isn’t the first instance of an active NBA player being implicated in gambling on games. Previously, Johntay Porter, a former player for the Toronto Raptors and the younger sibling of Denver Nuggets’ Michael Porter Jr., received a lifetime ban from the NBA after it was determined he had colluded with gamblers during games in which he participated.
