Byron Scott, a former player for the Los Angeles Lakers and past NBA coach, is facing a lawsuit over claims of a sexual assault that allegedly occurred in 1987, as reported by the Associated Press.

Initially filed in California in December 2022 and updated this month, the lawsuit charges Scott with sexual battery and unlawful confinement. This recent amendment included the addition of Scott’s name, a detail he previously challenged unsuccessfully in court to keep confidential before the updated lawsuit was publicized.

The legal filings reveal that Scott, who was 26 at the time, is accused of assaulting a 15-year-old girl in a janitorial closet within the Campbell Hall High School gymnasium in Los Angeles. At the time, Scott was a Lakers team member and the incident reportedly occurred during the team’s off-season. The Lakers were at the high school to film a basketball instructional video and interact with students, parents, and faculty.

Linda Bauermeister, Scott’s attorney, addressed the allegations on Wednesday.

Bauermeister stated, “Our client is shattered by these allegations. He had believed the plaintiff was over the age of 18 and was unaware of her claims to the contrary until 35 years later. He holds a deep respect for all women and girls, and these allegations have taken him and his family by surprise.”

Scott has acknowledged that there was a sexual encounter.

The claimant is seeking a jury trial and is demanding damages in excess of $25,000, which includes compensation for lost earnings and legal fees, from both Scott and Campbell Hall High.

Scott was part of the Lakers during their “Showtime” era and contributed to the team’s NBA championships in 1985, 1987, and 1988. Following his playing career, he coached in the NBA from 1998 to 2016, including a stint as the head coach for the Lakers.
