NBA Expansion on Hold: Adam Silver Reveals Critical Barrier

The idea of adding new teams to the NBA is a popular topic among enthusiasts and the press, and it was addressed by commissioner Adam Silver during the recent NBA Board of Governors meeting.

Silver emphasized that the NBA is not on the verge of expansion anytime soon due to several significant obstacles that need to be overcome. A primary concern is figuring out the local television rights and game distribution strategies for potential new teams in their respective markets.

“It would be irresponsible of us not to solve the challenges of local television distribution before considering expansion,” Silver commented, as reported by Front Office Sports. “It wouldn’t be practical to establish a team in a new city without having a clear plan for how games will reach their local audience.”

Silver indicated that while the NBA is interested in expansion in the future, the issue of regional broadcast rights needs to be addressed beforehand.

By the 2027–28 season, up to 18 NBA teams will have concluded their current regional sports network agreements, potentially opening the door for a consolidated national streaming service. Given Silver’s emphasis on securing broadcasting agreements before expanding, it appears unlikely that a new NBA team will debut until at least that time, or possibly later.
