Nico Harrison, the general manager of the Dallas Mavericks, was publicly criticized in a harsh manner this Wednesday. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon shared a dismissive comment about Harrison’s job security from another executive in the league.

Ever since he traded Luka Doncic, a key player for the franchise, in early February, there has been significant backlash against Harrison. Despite the negative reaction and the subsequent misfortunes of the Mavericks’ season, including injuries to Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving right after the trade, team owner Patrick Dumont has not hinted at any potential firing.
Earlier this week, Dumont did prompt Harrison to conduct his first press conference since the controversial trade. The press conference was notably private, with no phones or recording devices allowed, which did not do much to quell the speculations about Dumont’s concerns regarding Harrison’s management.

Moreover, an anonymous executive expressed a rather ruthless hope that Harrison stays on board for selfish reasons. During an episode of The Hoop Collective podcast, it was revealed that this executive appreciates having a “desperate” GM in the league.
Here’s the exact statement:
“I was speaking with an executive today, and I’m always asked about Nico’s job security. All I can relay is that so far, Patrick Dumont has shown him significant public support. But this press conference might be a sign of real concerns from Dumont. Obviously.”
“… However, this executive really hopes he stays for another transaction cycle. Having a desperate GM around is always beneficial for others,”
This remark is quite harsh, and Harrison has likely grown accustomed to dealing with harsh criticism and displeasure from the fans, but such comments from a fellow executive are particularly cutting.

On a positive note, despite the challenging season, Dallas managed to triumph over the Sacramento Kings in the play-in game on Wednesday, which means they still have a shot as the season progresses.
