The dismissal of Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown caught Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone off guard, just as it did for much of the NBA community.

Brown had recently guided the Kings to their first playoff appearance in 17 years and had been honored with the NBA Coach of the Year award. However, upon reflection, Malone found the situation eerily similar to his own experience, having been the Kings’ coach from 2013 to 2014.
“Initially, I was truly shocked and surprised, then I asked myself, ‘Why am I shocked and surprised?’” Malone recounted to the media on Friday. “For two reasons. First, being an NBA head coach means you bear the blame. The victories often credit players like Sabonis and Fox, but the losses fall on Mike Brown. That’s just the nature of this job.”
Setting the stage for further comments, Malone then sharply criticized the decision.
“Secondly, it’s about who he was working for. So, I’m not surprised Mike Brown was dismissed, because I was fired by the same person,” Malone said. “What really angered me was the manner in which it happened: they lose their fifth consecutive game, he addresses the media post-practice, and while he’s on his way to the airport for the next game in L.A., they call and fire him over the phone. Absolutely no class, no courage. That’s my take on it.”

Malone was the initial head coach appointed by Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé in 2013, yet his tenure was short-lived. Since then, Ranadivé’s approach has generally been to maintain a tight grip over his coaching staff.
After leaving Sacramento, Malone secured the role as head coach for the Nuggets in 2015. Unlike his time with the Kings, in Denver, Malone was given sufficient time to develop the team, leading them to seven consecutive playoff runs and clinching a championship in 2023.
Considering Brown’s impressive coaching record and the Kings’ notorious history, it wouldn’t be surprising if he soon finds another coaching position.
