Miami-Dade County Celebrates Local Olympians

On a recent Wednesday, Miami-Dade County paid tribute to six distinguished athletes from South Florida for their achievements in the Olympics. The honorees included artistic swimmer Daniella Ramirez, sprinter Twanisha Terry, water polo goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson, sailor Sarah Newberry Moore, and judoka Angelica Delgado. Among these celebrated figures, the most notable was Bam Adebayo, the center for the Miami Heat.

Another significant presence at the event was A’ja Wilson, the two-time WNBA MVP. Despite her lack of direct ties to the event—hailing from South Carolina and playing for Las Vegas—Wilson made a point to attend the ceremony.

Wilson’s attendance was particularly noteworthy considering her performance the previous night, where she scored 30 points and secured 14 rebounds for her team. With a game scheduled in Connecticut just two days later, it was clear that Wilson went out of her way to be part of the Miami ceremony.

During the event, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava seemed to inadvertently hint at the effort Wilson made to attend while addressing the audience.

“We also have the Heat in the house,” Mayor Levine Cava announced. “Yes, indeed. We’ve got Bam. He’s right here. We’ll need to delve into that shortly, but we also have a visiting Olympian from out of town.” She then paused to check her notes before formally introducing Wilson.

“A’ja Wilson. And she took home the gold in women’s basketball. I suppose that’s somewhat related to Bam and the Heat being here today,” she added.

Wilson was observed sitting beside Adebayo’s mother, managing only a shrug and a smile in response. However, this simple gesture was enough to fuel ongoing rumors about their relationship, which had been circulating since the summer.

Regardless of the speculation surrounding Wilson’s surprise visit to the ceremony so soon after competing on the opposite coast, congratulations are due to both A’ja Wilson and Bam Adebayo for their Olympic gold medals. They truly are remarkable Olympians.
