LeBron James’s decision to activate the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers for a $52.6 million salary might seem like a no-brainer for most, but it certainly caused some ripples throughout the NBA last month.

This move was discussed in depth by ESPN’s journalists Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst, who reported that the announcement threw the league into disarray, with many team executives scrambling to understand the implications of the statement issued by James’s representative, Rich Paul.

James’s choice to stay on with the Lakers without securing his future beyond 2025 also reportedly led one former All-Star to rethink his options for the summer:

“Regardless of James’s motives,” the ESPN writers noted, “the effects were felt immediately. Free agent center Brook Lopez, initially leaning towards the Lakers for a potential starting position, reconsidered due to the uncertainty surrounding James’s tenure with the team and chose instead to join the LA Clippers as a backup.”

Lopez signed a two-year contract with the Clippers worth $18 million, where he will play behind center Ivica Zubac.

Meanwhile, the Lakers are reportedly navigating what ESPN describes as “the most delicate superstar transition in NBA history,” as they shift their focus from James to 26-year-old standout Luka Doncic.

It’s definitely a situation to watch closely.
