As NBA free agency negotiations are set to begin next week, all eyes are on the developments and updates. One of the most intriguing teams to follow will undoubtedly be the Los Angeles Lakers. It is widely anticipated that LeBron James will opt into his $52.5 million player option for the 2025-26 season. This decision could potentially mark his final season with the Lakers, whether due to retirement or opting to join another team subsequently.

Therefore, the strategy the Lakers adopt this season is critical, particularly if it turns out to be James’s last opportunity to clinch a second championship with the team.

The Lakers are reportedly showing interest in acquiring Brook Lopez, according to insights from Jake Fischer.

In a guest post for Marc Stein’s newsletter, Fischer mentioned, “…numerous rival teams expect the center-seeking Los Angeles Lakers to aggressively pursue Lopez, aiming to snatch him from the Bucks.”

Lopez, who was a Laker during the 2017-18 season just before LeBron joined, was originally acquired through a trade. After his stint with the Lakers, he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks where he has played for seven seasons, contributing significantly as a defensive asset and an offensive spacer, and also being a part of their championship-winning team.

Lopez has notably transformed his gameplay in his later career. He shifted from making less than five three-point attempts per season in the early years to making hundreds, aligning his skills with the contemporary NBA emphasis on spacing and high-volume three-point shooting.

In the last season, Lopez averaged 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game, shooting 50.9% from the field and 37.3% from three-point range.

It is expected that the Lakers will be among several teams vying to sign the veteran center in this year’s free agency.
