The unexpected transfer of Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers took everyone by surprise, including NBA players, commentators, and fans, not to mention Doncic himself. At his first press conference as a Laker on Tuesday, Doncic confessed that he was still trying to come to terms with the reasons behind the trade, describing his feelings as “hard” to assimilate in the immediate aftermath.

He wasn’t alone in his feelings.

Kyrie Irving, Doncic’s teammate at the Mavericks until recently, expressed his deep emotions about the trade after Dallas’s narrow 118-116 defeat to the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday. He shared his sorrow over the departure of his close friend and teammate.

“Just really shocked,” Irving recounted. “It’s like you’re about to go to sleep and suddenly you get news like this. I’m still mourning. I miss my brother.”

Irving joined the Mavericks in February 2023, marking the beginning of what would be known as the Doncic-Irving era. Though their friendship didn’t develop instantly, their bond grew during preseason trips to Madrid and Abu Dhabi, laying the foundation for a strong camaraderie.

This connection translated into success on the basketball court. After a disappointing postseason in 2022-23, the Mavericks, bolstered by the duo, reached the NBA Finals in the 2023-24 season, where they were ultimately outplayed by the Boston Celtics.

Their bond was apparent during a press conference following a playoff victory against the Los Angeles Clippers last summer, where Doncic highlighted Irving’s uplifting spirit, and Irving credited Doncic with enhancing his leadership skills.

It is this deep connection and their on-court success that make processing the trade challenging for Irving.

“This is business, far beyond my control,” Irving explained. “I need to adapt and be ready to embrace my new teammates with open arms, and also prepare to return to Dallas to address our fans. I know they’re feeling this too. I’m with you, guys.”

“So, it’s definitely a period of adjustment. I don’t want to undermine this or disrespect our new teammates. They’re here to help us win and build towards a championship, but like everyone else watching from home, it’s painful to witness.”
