Kevin Durant is well-known for his forthright responses to criticism.

During a discussion with The Athletic‘s Doug Haller, Durant addressed criticisms from a particularly outspoken detractor this season regarding his time with the Phoenix Suns: ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.

On the platform X, previously known as Twitter, Durant reacted to a video where Smith critiqued his leadership with the Suns. Durant appears to be quite irritated by the comments, referring to Smith as a “clown” during the interview.

“Honestly, I don’t see how anyone takes Stephen A. seriously,” Durant remarked. “I’ve been in the NBA for 18 years. I’ve never spotted Stephen A. at a practice, a film session, or even a shoot-around. I’ve only seen him on TV, where he’s often disparaging players. … To me, he’s just a clown. He always has been. Feel free to quote me on that.”

Durant acknowledged that there are aspects of his game that need improvement, but he expressed frustration over pundits like Smith, who do not observe his practice sessions or leadership firsthand, yet feel qualified to comment on them.

“Sure, there are things I need to improve,” Durant admitted. However, he noted that discussions about leadership are “very ambiguous and subjective.”

It is expected that Smith will respond to Durant’s comments in the upcoming Monday episode of First Take on ESPN.
