The debate on whether the NBA is facing a viewership crisis is open to interpretation.

As the holiday season approached, there were murmurs about dwindling ratings. However, a series of high-profile games on Christmas Day, including a highly anticipated Warriors vs. Lakers game which turned out to be the most viewed regular season game in the past five years, has somewhat alleviated those concerns.

Kevin Durant, however, remains committed to boosting viewership, sharing with ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne that, “I want to see the viewership increase. The league is here to stay, but we’re definitely experiencing a challenging phase regarding this issue.”

Durant believes he understands the root cause of the regular season disinterest.

“It seems like fans are only interested in free agency and drama, and focus mainly on the playoffs and Finals and what these mean for a player’s legacy,” Durant stated. “This mindset leads them to disregard the regular season.”

With narratives driving much of the NBA’s allure, the drama of personal relationships and team dynamics often overshadows regular season matchups, such as those between less prominent teams like the Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic.

Durant’s observation is unmistakable—the focus on championships and media debates does indeed overshadow the daily wonders of the NBA. However, events like the games on Christmas serve as a reminder that the sport of basketball remains vibrant and beloved.
