Joel Embiid found himself in the spotlight after a confrontation with a Philadelphia journalist on Saturday night following the Sixers’ defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies. The journalist, Marcus Hayes of the Philadelphia Inquirer, was pushed by Embiid, who was upset over Hayes’s recent article that criticized Embiid and mentioned his family.

The following day, Hayes shared details of the incident with his colleague Gina Mizell, revealing that Daryl Morey, the 76ers’ president of basketball operations, had apologized for Embiid’s behavior, calling it “unacceptable.” According to the Inquirer:

“Hayes was taken to a meeting with Morey and general manager Elton Brand after the altercation,” Mizell reported. “During the meeting, Morey and Brand apologized, expressed their regret about the incident, and asked Hayes to recount his version of what happened. They both agreed that Embiid’s behavior was out of line.”

Mizell also reported that Embiid’s hand made contact with Hayes’s neck and collarbone area during the altercation.

The NBA has initiated an investigation into the episode, and the 76ers have stated they will fully cooperate. The team is set to face the Phoenix Suns on Monday night.
