With the NBA season fast approaching, it’s no shock to see Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick making podcast appearances. This past Tuesday, Redick joined ESPN’s The Lowe Post to discuss his entry into coaching, his decision to join the Lakers, and his expectations for his inaugural season coaching from the sidelines.

Navigating his first year, Redick faces the challenge of integrating guard Bronny James into the team. Redick acknowledged the potential of young talents like guards Max Christie and Jalen Hood-Schifino to secure their spots in this year’s rotation. He also commended first-round forward Dalton Knect for his exceptional shooting skills. However, it was only upon Lowe’s probing did he elaborate on his strategy for James, the team’s second-round pick.

Redick revealed that James is slated to spend some time with the Lakers’ G-League team. He views the G-League team and its coaching staff as integral to the Lakers, suggesting a seamless extension of the main team.

“The G-League will be utilized for very specific objectives,” Redick explained to Lowe. “Bronny is a young player I highly regard… as a basketball talent. This was something I emphasized during his press conference. He represents the first player under our guidance to shape and develop. Thus, we see the G-League as a pivotal component of our player development strategy.”

While Redick didn’t specify any timelines for Bronny’s development phases, he did hint at early-season court time with Bronny’s father, LeBron James, confirming discussions have been in place.

“Regarding that special moment, yes, we’ve deliberated over it and have plans,” Redick shared. “It will be realized sooner than later, without setting any fixed commitments right now.”

With this anticipation, it appears Los Angeles is eager to feature Bronny alongside LeBron on the court at the earliest opportunity to cherish this unique moment before continuing with their regular lineup.
