The Tatum family is making waves in basketball championships worldwide.

Justin Tatum, who coaches the NBL’s Illawarra Hawks and is the father of Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum, recently led his team to victory in the Australian league’s grand final series. This triumph marked the Hawks’ first championship win in 24 years and only their second in the team’s history.

Following Jayson’s NBA championship win last season, he shared some valuable insights with his father’s team through a motivational pregame video. Justin revealed that he watched the video upon waking on the day of the decisive Game 5, which aimed to boost the players’ confidence and guide them on securing the championship.

“Jayson sent a supportive message to my team which really inspired them,” Justin explained during a postgame press conference, sporting championship attire and protective goggles. “He mentioned that the entire 2023-24 Boston Celtics team was watching our game. His message was powerful and truly resonated with the players, making them believe they could achieve what we did.”

The support from the NBA champions watching the game added an extra layer of motivation for the NBL champions to clinch the series. Matthew Dellavedova, a former NBA champion with the Cleveland Cavaliers and currently with Melbourne United, was awarded MVP of the series but chose to pass the honor to Hawks guard Will ‘Davo’ Hickey, whom he felt was more deserving, much to the delight of the fans.

Justin also channeled his son Jayson’s celebratory spirit with a “we did it” moment after the final game.

Despite being halfway around the world, the Celtics star’s encouragement played a crucial role in his father’s team’s championship win.
