On January 27, 2025, Netflix subscribers and TF1 viewers will have the chance to watch All the Blue in the Sky, a highly anticipated TV movie co-produced by the two broadcasters. This film adapts the 2019 bestseller by Mélissa da Costa, which also made the list of France’s 25 favorite novels in a poll conducted by France Télévisions and the BBC, the results of which were revealed in December 2022. Directed by Maurice Barthélémy (RRRrrrr!!!, Low Cost…), the adaptation features popular TV actors Camille Lou and Hugo Becker, who previously starred together in the series I Promise You.
The plot follows Emile, a man in his late twenties who learns he has a disease similar to Alzheimer’s and decides to leave everything behind to live out his final months away from the hospital. He embarks on a road trip with Joanne, a stranger who is escaping an unspeakable sorrow. Mélissa da Costa has never confirmed whether Emile and Joanne’s journey is inspired by a real-life story. However, when asked about her inspirations at a press conference, the author explained that she began writing the novel at 17 with the intention of crafting a beautiful love story in the form of a journey, an escape, a tribute to freedom.
While Emile and Joanne are fictional, da Costa drew on personal experience to authentically portray her characters: she had the opportunity to spend time with elderly individuals, some of whom were suffering from Alzheimer’s, and their caregivers during vacations organized by Les Petits Frères des Pauvres. This experience helped her depict the relationship between Joanne and Emile. However, the specific ailment affecting Emile is fictional: Alzheimer’s disease typically manifests in older adults, but in very rare cases, it can appear as early as 30 years old, according to the Pasteur Institute of Lille.
