Written by Brendan O’Brien, known for his work on “Neighbors” and “Ninja Turtles: Teenage Years,” and directed by Seth Gordon of “Baywatch” and “Atypical” fame, “Back in Action” features two former CIA agents drawn back into the fray after their identities are compromised, despite having settled into family life.
But does “Back in Action” live up to expectations? If you’re in the mood for an uncomplicated, enjoyable action flick, Seth Gordon’s latest effort delivers. Thanks largely to the appeal of its stars (Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, along with Glenn Close and Andrew Scott), the film manages to entertain despite its somewhat cliché action sequences. However, if you’re seeking a cut above the typical offerings on streaming platforms, you might find yourself underwhelmed. “Back in Action” is bogged down by heavy-handed writing and stereotypical characters, and while a few jokes do hit the mark, they’re not enough to fully engage or sustain suspense. It’s not a disaster, but it’s far from memorable.
