Luka Doncic was unexpectedly removed from the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday after he scored a challenging shot and engaged in a verbal altercation with a Thunder supporter in the audience.

The referee, J.T. Orr, apparently misunderstood Doncic’s comments, thinking they were directed at him rather than the fan, and consequently gave Doncic his second technical foul of the match.

Following the match, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin spoke with Jeremy Price, the fan involved in the exchange with Doncic, to get his perspective on the incident.

“In the heat of the moment, I teased him about missing a shot, calling him short, and he retaliated with a curse word just as J.T. [Orr] turned around, which led to the technical,” Price recounted.

Price speculated that Orr might have thought Doncic’s remarks were meant for him, which is likely why he issued the technical foul.

This event took place in the middle of the fourth quarter. With Doncic’s basket, the score was 108–107 in favor of the Lakers. However, following his ejection, the team couldn’t maintain their lead and ultimately fell 136–120. Doncic ended the game with 23 points, five assists, and three rebounds over 31 minutes.
