With the NBA experiencing a decrease in TV viewership and facing criticism regarding the prevalence of three-point shots and high-scoring matches, a notable figure in the sport has echoed the sentiments of detractors.

Draymond Green, the forward for the Golden State Warriors, openly criticized the current state of the NBA, labeling the matches as “boring” while addressing the media during the NBA All-Star Weekend.

“Every play used to be like a strategic chess move,” Green explained to The Associated Press. “That’s rarely the case in today’s NBA. What we see most often is just a race to see who can run faster and shoot more three-pointers, with little strategic depth. I find it very boring.”

According to Basketball Reference, the average scoring in the league is at 113.4 points per game, which is the third-highest average since the introduction of the three-point line in the 1979-80 season. The seasons of 2023-24 and 2022-23 recorded even higher averages. Moreover, the current average of 13.4 three-point shots made per game on 37.5 attempts is the highest in the league’s history.

Green, reflecting on an interview with the late basketball icon Kobe Bryant who described the modern game as predominantly “penetrate and pitch,” concurred fully with Bryant’s observation.

“He was absolutely right,” Green stated.

Combined with the opinions of fans and former players about the game’s decline in physicality compared to past eras, it’s clear why some people are currently disenchanted with the NBA.

The Sports Business Journal reports that national NBA viewership has fallen by five percent compared to the previous season. However, there seems to be a slight upward trend possibly due to the excitement surrounding a hectic NBA trade deadline with significant player transactions.

Despite a $76 billion broadcast and media rights agreement suggesting robust public interest in the sport, the NBA appears to still have issues to address, even among prominent figures like Green.
